INTERVIEW W/ OVALIZERIPE

Ovalizeripe is a singer and producer of electronic music. She is really cool. We really interviewed her.

She is also a member of a band called Gloam.

Read...

TCRR: Whats your name, what do you do, and where are you from?

OVALIZERIPE: My name is Olivia Perez I program music and sing for a band called Gloam. My solo stuff goes under the name of Ovalizeripe, which spans about 8 years of writing songs. Born and raised in Boulder Colorado.

TCRR: And where do you live now?

OVALIZERIPE: Between Boulder and uh-utter chaos.

TCRR: Describe your music...

OVALIZERIPE: It's what I picture underworld creatures getting down to, maybe there are some Goblins dancing around a bon fire worshipping a blue skinned Goddess prima donna, skeletons playing Xylophone on their ribs and dancing to ruminative beats, specters getting emotional to songs about outerspace, electro-magnetism in alchemy, conjuring Toltec memories... and you know stuff like that

TCRR: You seem to be really into esoteric vocabulary, can you tell us about the name "Ovalizeripe"?

OVALIZERIPE: It's an "anagram" for...guess what...I'll give you a clue: It's a first and last name.

TCRE: What other name do you go by? Which one is your official recording artist name?

OVALIZERIPE: Gloam is the only other name I am associated with right now, but I hope to have many more side projects in the future.

TCRR: How did you get started producing your own music?

OVALIZERIPE: My brother Fletcher (also in Gloam) discovered a program called buzz which is a sequencing program using samples and sound generating machines. I started messing around on buzz when I was about 16 or 17. My brother lived in Germany at the time so it was convenient that we could send the songs back and forth to eachother via email. I don't play any instruments (proficiently that is) so I liked the idea that I could have total control over how all the instruments happened in a way that made sense in my own brain. It all really came out of having no other musicians to play with, and a dire need to make sound. Everything I do is an experiment in the fact that most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing, or what sound is going to come out next. I love using mad mad effects like delays, choruses and crazy distortions.

TCRR: A lot of what you produce might resonate with Hip Hop producers and people who are into Beats... Do you have any Hip Hop influence in your production?

OVALIZERIPE: I love alot of hip hop, the vibe, the rhythms, and the way the words fall in intonation. I'm really impressed with a few different artists...I love Del tha funky homosapien, who I got to see live recently Rahzel is incredible who I also saw live, M.I.A, Cibo Matto, Missy E has some really bad ass production, the beats in Ice Cube's Natural Born Killaz
are impeccible....As a ehem... a woman.... my only complaint about main stream hip hop and the reason I don't listen to more is mostly because of the idiotic things that most of them rap about. I know there is TONS of less known and more intelligent hip hop but alas! my repertoire of underground hip hop is scant to say the least. Maybe I could get some help on that one...?

TCRR: Tell us about Gloam.

OVALIZERIPE: GLoam is an experimental art rock band consisting of: myself (vocals and song programing and sequencing) My brother Fletcher Williams (guitar, programing and sequencing, Keyboards, technical stuff) my sister Michaela Perez (Keyboards and guitar) Brendan Schutt ( Bass) and Fernando Joaquin Guzman on (Drums). We play around Denver mostly, somtimes in Boulder, but we hope to plan a west coast tour soon. Our goal is to ever so gently push and prod on the fringes between harmony and chaos.

TCRR: When did you start getting into making music?

OVALIZERIPE: I knew since I was a young one that was what I would do. My Dad plays classical guitar and my mom is a singer so I grew up surrounded by music and would listen to anything and everything. When I was like 13 I went through one of those ehem...metal /industrial phases and I thought I wanted to play guitar in a metal band. When I started producing songs in Buzz they sounded nothing like anything I was listening to or had ever heard before so I kept going with it wanting to experiment as much as posible. I have a hankerin' to create sounds and use samples that have never been heard before. For instance in the song "Ganymede" I use a sample of a recording of Jupiter's radio emissions.

TCRR: Who are some musicians in your peer group that you get inspiration from these days?

OVALIZERIPE: I'm always inspired by Denver band Fissure Mystic because of the tighness of the instrumentation and the sheer volume of songs written, but actually most of my inspiration comes from books and conversations or from some really random, unexpected quarters.

Ovalizeripe "Cunnus Diaboli and the Red Sulpher"

TCRR: What is your favorite song that you have recorded?

OVALIZERIPE: I love all of dem songs so much but "Cunnus Diaboli and the Red Sulpher" puts a sprig in me step and a sparkle in my eye it does...

TCRR: What are some upcoming projects that you have your hand in, that you are real proud of?

OVALIZERIPE: My sister Michaela and I are conjuring some crazy tunes together...but these are still in their embryonic phases.

TCRR: Who are some Colorado artists that you would like to give a shout out to or just give due credit to?

OVALIZERIPE: Fissure Mystic, The Vitamins, Ghost Buffalo, Tornado Alley, Lions the Brave, Timmy Flips, Harpoontang...list goes on....

TCRR: Can you tell us what the future holds for Ovalizeripe?

OVALIZERIPE: Ovalizeripe hopes to quit her day job.

And so do we...

Hisider Asks Kid Hum What The Deal Is

Hisider: How big is your record collection?

Kid Hum: About 2,000 Deep, With about 1,000 Hip Hop and 1,000 for Sampling.

Hisider
: How do you feel about the whole sample/no samples thing?

Kid Hum: Personally I find that when something catches my ear, it is often built from a sample, or an old record. I think the best producers are intuitive and can make a good beat with whatever though.

Sometimes I will really get into a song thinking it is samples, and find out that it is all live instrumentation.

1865 for instance, is a producer who can make a dope beat using all live instruments, and who often fools me.

I feel like "Hip Hop Bands" usually miss the mark, because they don't alter their sound live, using EFX or whatever, they juts come on stage sounding like Lewis and Floorwax hired a Rapper. I had this one kid who would constantly tell me how "the future of Hip Hop was with a live band", and I was like "man I must not see what you see then".

Like Radiohead for instance, if you have ever seen them live, you know that every instrument on stage is going to sound unique, like they do shit to their instruments no one else does, and they do it LIVE. So Radiohead is further ahead of the "Hip Hop Band" curve than most of these Jam Bands w/ Rappers.

Hisider: Top 10 Producers of all time?

Kid Hum: Shit...

For me... I'll give you 20.

Large Professor, Dilla, Madlib, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Mannie Fresh, Khayree, The RZA, Pimp C, Z-Ro, Exile, Stro The 89th Key, Ohmega Watts, The Alchemist, 1865, Sol Messiah, Mr.Lee, Es-Nine, Pete Rock,

Hisider
: Favorite Colorado Emcees?

Kid Hum: Sunken State, Whygee, Yonnas, Deca, Ichiban, A.V.I.U.S., Distrakt, Offly Nice, Mike Wird, Phumes, Points, Azma, Status

Hisider: If you could work with anyone in the world right now. Who all would you choose?

Kid Hum: See my list of Colorado Emcees, lol, I'm Blessed Yo! I'm working with my favorite MC's on Earth right now.

I would like to see an Eminem or 50 Cent album produced by Kid Hum, I would love to get beats on Young Jeezy's next album. I would love to work with Sugar Tongue Slim. And any of those Colorado cats I mentioned that I haven't yet gotten to know or work with, I would love to work with.

Hisider: What projects are you working on in '09?

Kid Hum: I'm producing an entire album for Cyrano aka Cy Yung of Raleigh NC, called SOBEIT, which is going to be something to talk about.

I'm producing an entire album for Sunken State.

I'm producing an entire album for Mike Wird, called Mike Wird and Kid Hum are AT ODDS.

I'm doing a crazy project with Rockthedub.com which will feature a TON of top notch MC's.

I'm sending beats out every day, and making beats, and digging, so hopefully just a steady stream of new work.

I wanna get something finished with Whygee too, I know he is working on a bunch of stuff I gave him so that might be another album, or at the very least I should have a bunch of Productions on some things Whygee has in store.

Hisider: What's the hell is Offshore Drilling(seen some shit online)?

Kid Hum: That is the "Rock The Dub Presents... Kid Hum". That is going to be a motherfucker. I am going to be able to die happy after that shit drops.

Hisider: Everybody is talking bout this is the year for Colorado Hip Hop to Explode. Do you agree/disagree?

Kid Hum: I agree 100%, I am going to personally ensure it in fact. Lol. And I encourage everybody to do the same. And if anybody needs College Radio Promotion (getting charted on the CMJ) I am now open for business. Hit me up for Rates.

AN INTERVIEW W/ PLAYALITICAL

We wanted to do a feature on Colorado Rapper/Producer PLAYALITICAL, so we hit him up. He recommended an interview, so here it is! Some CO Rap Report exclusives in there so read up!!!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

TCRR: Whats your name, what you do, and where are you from?

PLAYALITICAL: Dustin Robbins, Im an economic hitman, music is just one of many games i play. I was born in Denver but raised in Illinois from age 9 to 17. Thats where I got my heart from.

TCRR: And where do you live now?

PLAYALITICAL: In rural Colorado.

TCRR: Describe your music...

PLAYALITICAL: A message inside a message.

TCRR: How did you get started producing and making beats?

PLAYALITICAL: One day when i was 13 i wondered how the rap group "Outkast" was able to mix their voice with a beat and put it on a tape. I went to radioshack and the rest is history.

TCRR: How did you get started rapping?

PLAYALITICAL: I lived in a small but dangerous town where everybody knew me and my friend Mike Schmidt AKA Pimpilitical. He use to freestyle i would make beats. Slowly i wanted to rap too so i started writing songs.

TCRR: I know you used to do a lot of stuff with Spoke In Wordz back in the day, do you have a Crew?

PLAYALITICAL: My crew is more like a Secret Society. Powerfull very powerfull but secret. Hustlers, lawyers, rappers, goons & gorrillas ect ect. Spoke is like a brother to me. As the CEO of IEG i choose to reveal information of our destiny as the destiny to do so manifests.

TCRR: Can you get in to your relationship with Bizzy Bone?

PLAYALITICAL: We both felt like it was a good idea that i produce an album for him from beginning to end. We were gonna do three records that year for "Baby" Cash Money Records. Things didnt work out so we put it out the indie way. We did what we were meant to do and thats it. We dont really keep up wit each other.

TCRR: Who are some producers in your peer group that you get inspiration from these days?

PLAYALITICAL: Ive been in my own world. Nobody fuels my fire anymore. Kanye West's new album "808's and heartbreak" is my fav album right now. Hes in the future of rap which is my main goal as a producer and artist. I'm ANTI 90's. The 90s are over. Everybody needs to stop rapping like Gangstar and Tupac and be themselfs.

TCRR: What is your favorite song and album that you have done?

PLAYALITICAL: Doin It Wrong (feat Bizzy Bone) from my Code Green album. People i look up to in the industry told me "Thats your voice stick with it".

TCRR: What are some past projects that you have your hand in, that you are real proud of?

PLAYALITCAL: Duce Stabs "Im Sooo Screwed" is my fav album ive ever produced for another artist. Only because i let my creativty run wild and i didnt give a fuck what the people were gonna think. It was fun making it but it wasnt my best seller.

TCRR: What are some upcoming projects that you have your hand in, that you are real proud of?

PLAYALITICAL: Get ready here is the list for 2009. You truely are the first one to know this as far as press goes.

Feb 2009- Olinda Cordova "The Triumph"

April 2009 - Playalitical Presents "Denver's Most Wanted Vol 3" feat Tech N9ne, MC Magic to name a few and other Local artist from Colorado.

May 2009 - Playalitical and DJ Chonz Present "Catch The Buzz Vol 3" (its coming out in may because i forecast it will take DJ Chonz at least 2 months to burn the album the way he mixed it and set it on his porch so i can pick it up and release it lol.) He's a busy guy like me so i gotta give him shit. ;)

June 2009 **********Playalitical - Pipe Dreams**********
My best work yet. Feat Juvinile, Fabolous, Daz Dillinger, Domino and more.

July 2009 - Young Droop Presents "Men Of Honor"

August 2009 - Young Droop - "Hot Commodity"

Im also negotiating a deal right now with Krazyie Bone's Thugline Records to realease 5 dvd documentaries and a Krayzie Bone Solo. Either way you should hear me and Krayzie on a few songs really really reallly soon!!

TCRR: Who are some Colorado artists that you would like to give a shout out to or just give props to?

PLAYALITICAL: Interstate Ike and Julox.

TCRR: Can you tell us what the future holds for Playalitical?

PLAYALITICAL: Ive come to the hard realisation that god gave me a gift. I wanted to throw it away so i could get some real money. Theres not much money in music anymore. I have the mind set of a jewish banker nowadays so music money is a joke. Money is a joke period. The bankers are gonna realise that as soon as we go into martial law and the games turns faggot on them. I feel like its a sin to throw my gift away. So im gonna continue recording and marketing music even if nobody buys it.

(TCRR: Big thanks to Playalitical for taking the time out to answer these questions. We really enjoyed his answers, he is a sharp dude.)
